Honor the Season
5 things worth sharing this week
- Corita Kent, an artist and former nun, encouraged people to honor seasons. Kent learned the power of seasons by staring at a maple tree. Sometimes the harshest winters produced the most beautiful flower. We can’t always be producing. Ideas need seasons to produce fruit. Honor the season.
- I turned in my last reading report for my doctorate (now just have to write that darn dissertation). Ever since I submitted my report, I have not felt like reading books. So I hit pause. I feel like playing guitar. I feel like drawing. So I draw and I play guitar. As someone whose livelihood largely depends on reading, this feels worrisome. But I’m curious to see what new things will flow from this pause.
- I was so helped when I heard Gabor Maté say if he had it to do over again he would work less to focus on relationships. He noticed so much of his work was an attempt to “justify his existence.” Maté put language to the source of much of my stress. Who am I, if I’m not seen as impressive?
- Cal Newport’s newest book challenged me to pursue more depth. So I, on a whim, deleted almost every app from my phone. No internet, Social media, music, or podcasts. Since I’ve done this, I feel more focused and less stressed. I started writing more, which is where this post came from. It’s only been two weeks but I like the experiment so far.
- Much of what I know about preaching I learned from comedians. In his new special Alex Edelman gives a master class on how to use a stage, re-enact a conversation, and he gives the best call backs. The special centers around a white supremacy meeting Edelman (who is Jewish) attended. It was deeply moving and I laughed till it hurt.
I missed posting. I like to share what I’m learning. Float ideas about Biblical theology. Test art Amy and I are working on…. And share vibes.
I've not figured out how to talk about Biblical theology on here yet. More on that later.
Stay curious,
